Chico Mendes on his 6 month transformation, veganism and clean diet: “it is never too late to change”

Checkmat BJJ Bristol’s Head Coach Chico Mendes, one of the most renowned black belt in Europe and one of the nicest guys in BJJ, took to Facebook yesterday to share his transformation over the last 6 months just by becoming vegetarian and eating clean. Despite his age and responsibilities, the change is impressive and now Chico is preparing to go a step further and become vegan (no animal products including eggs, milk and honey). check out below what he has to say as well as some of his tips to replace animal based nutrition with vegan products:

6 months ago I did one of the best changes in my whole life, I became Vegetarian. Isn’t just about diet, drop weight or style, but about having good habits.
I am not doing diet, I just decided to eat clean and healthy so the results started to come. Now even in my cheat days I eat better and clean!

People always asking me if I am crazy coz I loved meat. For me wasn’t really difficult to stop meat but very very difficult is cut out bad sugar. The only time I had sugar the last 6 months I woke up the day after feeling so bad and lazy, so that means I am doing right by not eating it. But I really miss Ben & Jerry ice-cream & cupcakes lol. My head still 3% fatty people lol…

Today every time I see people eating bad sugar, eating a supermarket sandwich and all kind of junk food, drinking energy drinks and fizzy drinks, I feel so happy that I’m not doing this crap. I respect people habits for sure, just feel shame for myself coz I did the same for my whole life. I really don’t wanna my kids doing it, so the change need to start from myself. I am stopping doing with what I don’t want my kids to be doing!

The other day, one friend told me I am too old to starting changing my habits and to decide to fight in a lot competitions after a long time away from the competition tour. I always had priorities in my life, I became a daddy young and after a lot responsibilities came together. Also I abdicated myself to be a better professor and support my team to grow around the world. But MY FRIEND it is never too late to change our life and start again again again.

I believe we always need to keep our own evolution going and be ready to transform bad things and bad habits into good things and good habits.

So I decided to start preparing to become Vegan. Yep Vegan!
So from today every month I will add one day Vegan per week, So August I will be Vegan every Sunday, September every Sunday and Saturday, October Sunday, Saturday and Friday…. Till next February when I will be totally vegan!

* Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients.

What will be the different habits? I don’t drink cow milk, I just use coconut milk or Almond milk…but the biggest change will be Cheese! It’s time to try the Vegan cheese! Change the honey to agave nectar and start to check all products before eating. I will start take Vegan whey protein and Vitamin B to support. About eggs, I like and use a lot but isn’t my favourite food so it will be easy to change. For sure be healthy in UK means u have to spend loads of money in food! Difficult eat well in the place where people just eat crap and have the worse food habits I saw in my life. Just to have idea normal wrap is £1 for 8 wraps and the vegan one is £3.50 for 6 wraps.. But don’t worry I am not kind of guy who will try change you.

Where will you get protein from?
Lentils, tofu, black beans, quinoa, hemp seeds, spinach, broccoli, asparagus and peanut butter can give loads of protein and loads of good extra nutrients!
